Summary The ratio between the unidirectional fluxes of K+ across the frog skin with K-permeable outer membranes was determined in the absence of Na+ in the apical solutions. The experiments were performed under presteady-state conditions to be able to separate the flux ratio for K+ through the cells from contributions to the fluxes through extracellular leaks. The cellular flux ratio deviated strongly from the value calculated from the flux ratio for electrodiffusion. Extremely miniaturized longipedes insects (body length c. 0.3 mm) embedded in two pieces of Cretaceous amber from Myanmar are described and interpreted. Using inverted fluorescence and light microscopy for detailed analysis of microstructures, the inclusions were identified as primary larvae of the beetle family Ripiphoridae, subfamily Ripidiinae. While the structure of thoracic and abdominal segments including appendages corresponds well with the groundplan known in recent members of Ripidiinae, a curved prosternal ridge with prominent spines (each c. 5 μm), the reduced condition of stemmata and antennae and the lack of sharp mandibles are unique features within the entire family, apparently apomorphies of the longipedes larvae. A sinuate prosternal edge with a dense row of spines (prosternoctenidium) might be homologous with ‘head ctenidia’ in some previously described miniaturized conicocephalate larvae, but further investigation is needed. The morphological differences between the head of longipedes larvae and extant Ripidiinae are interpreted as adaptations to different groups of hosts and life strategies. Palaeoethology of the longipedes larvae is briefly discussed. In addition, the systematic placement of conicocephalate larvae from Canadian, Myanmar and Russian Cretaceous ambers, already interpreted by various authors as primary instars within Coleopterida (assigned to either Strepsiptera or to the coleopteran Tenebrionoidea: Ripiphoridae), is discussed. 相似文献

The distribution of cytosolic activity of nicotinamide:S-adenosylmethionine methyltransferase (nicotinamide methylase, EC 2.1.1.1) in normal tissues from adult rat and mouse and in tumors and the change in the enzyme activity during the the development of rat tissues were studied. (1) Rat liver exhibited the highest nicotinamide methylase activity among all adult tissues tested; other rat tissues, like adrenal, pancreas, kidney, brain and mouse tissues, had only less than 15% of the adult rat liver activity. (2) 3 days before birth, fetal liver showed a very low nicotinamide methylase activity (2% of adult rat liver), which, however, increased already 1 day before birth and reached the adult level on the day 28 after birth. (3) In a variety of hepatomas and ascites tumors, an inverse correlation, with some exceptions, between tumor growth rate and nicotinamide methylase activity could be seen. In all hepatomas, with the exception of Morris hepatoma 5123tc, nicotinamide methylase activity was significantly decreased in comparison to normal adult rat liver. The highly malignant Zajdela hepatoma, Yoshida sarcoma, sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich ascites tumor methylated nicotinamide only at a negligibly low rate. (4) Cultured RLC cells (an established rat liver cell line) from the stationary growth phase or G1-arrested RLC cells had about half of the adult rat liver activity, yet the activity was 70% higher than that of the logarithmically growing RLC cells. 相似文献
